The hidden cost of decision latency
How slow, unclear, or reversible decisions create execution drag that traditional delivery metrics often miss.

Executive summary
Decision latency is the time between when a decision is needed and when an accountable decision is made, communicated, and acted on. In large organizations, this delay often hides inside meetings, escalations, dependency reviews, and repeated alignment cycles.
Traditional delivery metrics may show work moving while decisions remain unresolved. LPM treats decision latency as an operating model signal, not just a team productivity issue.
Core thesis
Slow decisions create hidden coordination cost. The longer a decision remains unresolved, the more communication, rework, escalation, and dependency management the organization absorbs.
What LPM diagnoses
LPM inspects the conditions that make decisions slow, reversible, or hard to act on.
- Whether the decision has a named owner.
- Whether decision rights are explicit.
- Whether required evidence is available and trusted.
- Whether the decision is blocked by governance.
- Whether the decision is repeatedly escalated or reopened.
- Whether downstream work is waiting on the decision.
What leaders should ask
Decision latency becomes visible when leaders inspect the unresolved work behind progress reporting.
- What decisions are currently aging?
- Who owns the decision?
- What evidence is missing?
- Which teams are blocked by the decision?
- Is governance clarifying the decision or delaying it?
- Has this decision been reopened before?
Current evidence status
This brief is a framework-based analysis. It does not yet include benchmark data or customer results. Future benchmark work will use survey responses, diagnostic outputs, and anonymized platform signals to quantify decision latency patterns.
